Make familiarity the first filter
A holiday drive adds unfamiliar roads, navigation and parking to the day. Choose the transmission you are comfortable using. If you normally drive an automatic, specify that early in the conversation; if you confidently drive a manual, compare the available groups without treating manual as an automatic compromise.
Transmission is only one part of the choice. A familiar gearbox in a vehicle too small for the luggage still leaves a practical problem. Apply the passenger and bag requirements alongside the gearbox filter.
Do not infer the gearbox from a model name
The same model can appear in automatic and manual versions. A photo, brand or SUV badge does not establish the transmission. In this directory, the automatic-car collection uses fleet records explicitly marked Automatic, while the original provider group remains visible on each example.
Ask the operator to put the agreed transmission in the actual quote and reservation. If the booking is for a group or equivalent vehicle, clarify that any replacement must retain the gearbox you requested. Resolve that before collecting rather than after luggage is loaded.
Compare equivalent requests
To compare quotes, use the same dates, collection and return times, locations, transmission, seating and requested extras. An economy manual and a premium automatic are not a useful price comparison simply because both have four wheels. Compare the complete rental total for vehicles that meet the same brief.
The directory does not publish stale “from” prices as live offers. Contact the operator for a dated quote, and ask whether the proposed model is an example or guaranteed. That distinction matters when the gearbox is a firm requirement.
Use collection to learn the controls
Before setting off, ask for a brief explanation of unfamiliar controls, including parking brake, reverse selection, lighting and any assistance systems. Check the seat and mirror position while parked. A short handover is especially useful when the car differs from the model you drive at home.
Keep the operator’s contact details available and clarify any issue during collection. Driving comfort comes from familiarity with the actual vehicle, a realistic route and enough time, rather than a broad claim that one transmission solves every island road.
